Launching Amal, a marketplace website and app built from zero

Context
MAJD Digital Group set out to build a B2C marketplace for Iraq from scratch. It needed every part of an eCommerce business to work together: a wide catalogue, Arabic and English, more than one currency, local payments, delivery and customer service.
My role
Product Manager for Amal from 0 to 1, across web and app, catalogue, payments, logistics, customer service and seller tools. I also launched Sahl, the group's logistics platform that fulfilled Amal orders.
Approach
- Built both the marketplace website and the mobile app from scratch, in Arabic and English with multi-currency support.
- Designed a catalogue that scaled to 10,000+ products across electronics, FMCG, fashion and grocery.
- Integrated regional payment providers to move customers from cash on delivery to prepaid orders.
- Connected orders to logistics for delivery tracking, and set up customer service support for order issues and returns.
- Built a rules-based buy-box pricing engine for sellers.
- Used journey analytics and A/B testing to improve conversion.
Outcome
10,000+SKUs at launch scale
+30%prepaid orders
+50%conversion from journey testing
Reflection
In a cash-first market, payments are a growth lever. Local payment methods did more for prepaid orders than any discount.
